Equal Pay Conference

Apr 23, 2019

The Equal Pay act will be 50 years old next year, and this organising conference aims to bring people together to ensure that over the next 12 months we make progress to end unequal pay.

The law is clear, that men and women should be paid equally for ‘like work’, ‘work of equal value’ and ‘work rated as equivalent’. But the gender pay gap remains stubbornly high, currently at 18%. In part this is because women are often not given the opportunity to undertake high value work, but it is also because too many companies have pay structures that (unintentionally or otherwise) under value the work women do.

We will be bringing together a range of NGOs, some representatives of commerce, active shareholders, trade unionists, academics and women’s/feminist groups to share our insights and to discuss what we need to do over a 12-month period to raise the profile of unequal pay in both the political and the industrial arena.

We will be highlighting Equality Trust research on the gender pay gap and the extent to which it is a factor of unfair pay systems. We will have contributions from trade unions, academics, and the third sector, but most importantly we will be discussing what we can do, together to ensure progress before the law is 50 years old.
